How we teach maths at Edgewood Primary School
As a school, we have begun to follow a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics. One of the biggest principles behind this approach is the belief that all children can succeed at maths. In order to achieve this, we teach longer blocks on the same topic so that the skills the children are taught are more likely to be embedded before we move on to the next topic. All the children in a class are taught at the same pace, with those children who pick up mathematical concepts quickly given the opportunity to deepen their level of understanding through applying their skills to challenging problems.
We want to ensure that children not only understand how to do maths but also why it works. Because of this, we follow an approach which sees the children learning through using concrete and pictorial resources before they move on to more abstract number work.
To support this mastery approach, the school has invested in a scheme called Maths No Problem. By clicking on the link below, you can access a range of videos created specifically for parents by Maths No Problem which are designed to help you to understand more about the way that we teach maths at Edgewood.
